I am successfully running this fork on an old Arduino Mega:

This fork has an extra C axis for rotation (meant for Pick&place machines to rotate parts), but you should be able to just ignore the extra stepper if you just need XYZ.

Overheating and thus shutdown?
Try turn down the current on the X-axis driver.

The problem is that you are trying to run a linux binary on Mountain Lion: Arduino/build/linux/dist/tools/avrdude That will not work. Instead, download the Mac OS X Arduino package from, install and run: /Applications/

The board that comes with the kit is preloaded with GRBL. This means it doesn't have a bootloader flashed to the uC and thus can not be re-programmed in Arduino.
