I should have been more specific -- raster engraving needs fast movement, at least on one axis. For most other purposes, if the machine is too slow, you can just reduce the power of the laser. MXL belts, in theory, have some backlash; in practice, they're not too bad. GT2, HTD and other round tooth...

There's no ballscrew upgrade for the Z that I'm aware of. There's an Acme leadscrew upgrade from Improbable Construct, which is excellent and a great idea. As it is, the machine is plenty accurate for 3-D printing. Most 3-D printers use belts, so the Shapeoko is not at any disadvantage here. I don'...

I recently discovered the Shapeoko project, and I'm jumping in with both feet. I love the idea of a DIY CNC system, and have big plans to create a laser head for it for engraving and cutting, and then eventually doing an extruder to do 3-d printing.
