You killed the GRBL shield. I did something similar, and got exactly the same result. There is a short somewhere on the board and the powersupply is shutting down to protect it self then auto resetting.

Look for a material called Garolite. I am not sure if it is exactly what you want, but it will probably be close enough and probably easier to find.
