If you wrote to EEPROM once a day, it would take over 270 years to wear out. Grbl's laser mode was written with the assumption that users wouldn't switch between the two very often, if at all. A special M code to set the mode is something I've been planning on looking into eventually, but at the mom...

Try updating UGS to the most recent version or use UGS Platform. Grbl v1.1 requires a GUI compatible with the new streaming protocol tweaks (needed to be done to add overrides and more realtime data to the reports).

By itself Grbl does not move anything unless it's been commanded to do so. Either you have startup line programmed into Grbl, which you say you didn't. Or you or your GUI is sending some motion commands to Grbl. You also may be misunderstanding how the coordinate systems work in an open-loop system ...

Try wiping your EEPROM and updating your Nano's bootloader to the Uno's. In that order. Instruction on how to do that are on Grbl's Wiki.

Grbl shouldn't move upon a reset. Unless you programmed a motion in a $N startup line. The Grbl wiki states that it's highly recommended that you don't do that, because of the problem you just described.

What are the pluses and minuses of upgrading? The new realtime feedback protocol, which will show you state of Grbl and everything you need like IO pins, requires a GUI that supports it. You can check for gcode errors directly with Grbl by enabling its check-mode via a $C command. Another $C command will disable it and soft-reset Grbl. Or just soft-reset to get back to normal operation. This is the most robust way to check, because it is using Grbl's g-code parser and error-checking...

It turned out that this is indeed a bug in the Fusion360 source and/or post processing file a lot of people use.
