Have you looked at using Fusion 360? You'd mentioned Inventor and Fusion 360 is Autodesk's modern take on what Inventor was. Fusion 360 isn't dead simple to use but it is free, has lots of online help/tutorials, and if you're doing simple shapes, it is really easy for that. It's also very powerful, ...

@swhillier I'm in the same boat as you are. I didn't order it immediately because of the shipping to Canada and when I went back to do it, it was sold out.

Does anyone know if there's a timeline for when the z-axis plate upgrade will be available again?

It's currently saying it's sold out on the Shapeoko store

I used to get this error occasionally and found that the simplest thing to getting around error was to switch to using bCNC instead of Carbide Motion

If it's taking a long time, the one parameter you'll want to change is the "Cutting Feedrate", it controls the speed as it goes back and forth along the face of the surface. When I faced mine, I had it set to 80 in/min but it does depend on your end mill's diameter. Here's a link to the documentatio...

I did experince this in Fusion 360. I usually edit the g code to lift to whatever clearance I desire
Can you explain what steps you do edit the gcode to life the it to a safe level. It'd be really helpful, I've hit the problem too.

Got a response back from them.
They have the same issue on their personal computers and it's on the list of things to improve for the next *major* version.
