Can anyone explain spring-loaded tools for contours?
This tool specifically: http://www.2linc.com/spring_loaded_engraving_tool.htm Came up when I was searching for ways to compensate for slightly out-of-flat surfaces into which I machine small text. As you all now a slight Z difference on the workpiece results in awfully uneven text when V-carving. It...

Re: Joining the Club
Assume we're taking a block of medium-hard wood (roughly somewhere between pine and walnut) and need to mill out something the size and shape of a dinner plate. I'm not making dinner plates, it's just an analogy to illustrate roughly the idea of material to remove and the contours involved. :) The ...

Machining Polycarbonate - Nailed it!
I've been fabricating electronic enclosures from those watertight gray polycarbonate boxes made by Hammond and Bud. In the interest of documenting feeds and speeds, here are my results: Machining holes is easy - I've had great results: Using a 2-flute 1/8" end mill, 40 IPM, DWP611 speed at 1, depth ...

Re: New Hand Held CNC Machine
I think the use for it would be full-sheet projects. I can imagine cutting out the sides of a go-cart or something like that... Or huge engraved plywood signs.

Re: Infill recommendation?
All done! I had already done the engraving on raw wood by the time I got these helpful comments - and I normally do shellac prior to carving. Nonetheless, I put two coats of seal-coat on, then two coats of spray polyurethane. Once that cured I applied acrylic paint to great effect as seen below: htt...

Infill recommendation?
Here's a preview image from Vcarve for a kid's stool I'm making. Material is Poplar (very light color, dimensions about 15"x7", max depth carved is 0.1". James_Preview.png I want to infill with black or at least a very dark color. Typically I stain and finish my surfaces first, then carve, and whene...

Re: Gantry Squaring Problems
Update:
I re-checked the X rail to make sure the ends are cut square. Turns out, they are not, and that is the source of the problem. My protractor deceived me. I will shim exactly as Will suggested.

Gantry Squaring Problems
All, I've had my SO3 all year. It's been tons of fun. I finally decided to rebuild it, somewhat following TWForeman's blog. From the fist time I built it, I seem to have had this issue: http://www.shapeoko.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=7516&p=59136&hilit=gantry+square#p59136 Something is out of squ...

Re: flat ground aluminum plate
Attached is a PDF of the MDF wasteboard dimensions. It is for the half-piece of course, I believe the gap between the two halves should be assumed to be 0.00 so you can simply mirror along the right-hand edge and have a drawing for your aluminum.
I got the PDF from C3D so it's legit
