I would rather have a shapeoko hardware wise, but so far, I'm pretty happy with their electronics/controller kit, and they shipped pretty fast and answered some tech questions I had pretty quickly.

I too was part of the Batch 3 group, and just got my unit working, for electronics I went with a company called Probotix, who sells a nice complete kit of motor controllers and parallel interface. I've only tried one or two test "prints" so far with a sharpie.. and am still learning the ins and outs...
