Re: What about eBay spindles?
I've done the 3 v wheel upgrade for the z axis. Deflection with the redesigned z plate is less vs the old version and 3 sets of wheels.

Re: mist and air coolant system recommendation?
I have been looking at adding something like this and maybe driving it with an airbrush compressor or regular compressor? I've been tossing around this idea for some time as an air assist for the laser attachment.

Re: Problems milling aluminum 6061
Before success there is failure, at least for me. I had used an 1/8" 2 flute running 10in/min .01" step down. This seems to work fine if, and I mean IF you do not profile/contour more then 1/4" deep. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CiI9GsUUkAYHJuM.jpg:large I was able to mill 1/2" using a 1/4" diameter ...

Re: Who has Upgraded their Z Axis?
Much like others have done I followed suit. Added aluminum bar. Tapped the steel plate, and bolted the aluminum to the steel. I also added an additional set of V wheels. You can see the second set above the upper spindled mount holes. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/CA3EXSyWmWSNXLRlYnuXNiyEeTRkI8K...

Don't worry happens to everyone. I constantly hit the z limit on my machine. I find myself sliding the Dewalt up and down in it's holder to accommodate different pieces of stock.

Bit Storage Solution
Having only used a cigar box to hold the bits I've slowly been collecting I decided it was time to get organized.

Agree with Bob, autolevel would work perfectly. Chilipeppr and bCNC both have that functionality.

Re: Aluminum Fun :-(
Now that the pictures show up, it is easier to see what is going on. Leaving 1/4" for the contour is probably quite a lot too much, certainly if you are taking it in one pass. Ideally you don't want your cutter to be cutting more than 50% of it's diameter in a radial direction. More than that will ...

Re: Aluminum Fun :-(
Don't forget, the alloy matters a lot. Harder alloys with a fine grain structure (6082, 6005, 6061, 6060) will cut well. Softer (6063) or larger-grained (5083) will not cut as well. Really soft stuff is very hard to machine (1050, which is what cheap plate is made of, and the 1000 series in general...
