Will, have you considered placing the Y-axis driveshaft inside the hollow SO3 extrusion? It should be a simple, elegant solution. You'd need to design new plates though.

Not to hijack this thread. The OX is an open source CNC based on the openbuilds extrusions, which were in turn spawned by makerslide. http://www.openbuilds.com/forums/cnc-mills-routers.32/ Think of it as the cousin to shapeoko. How long before you have this made?

There's a guy over on the OX group who has abandoned belts and moved to rack and pinion. His results are very impressive. This extrusion seems like a natural fit for such a drive mechanism on a heavier/larger machine.

Why bother? For the motor plates, you need to adapt both the Y V-wheel holes and the X extrusion attachment points, and do something about the motors too. It would cost less to buy Shapeoko 3 plates to replace the Shapeoko 2 motor plates (they'd be not much bigger, made in much higher volume than t...
