Re: Cutting stainless steel?

Well, aluminum has been done by many people. It would be interesting to see if steel can be milled.

A Thanks to Edward for This Great Project

So about a year ago I decided to jump into two projects, ShapeOko and Printrbot. Both seemed quite exciting, and have been a great introduction to open-source hardware. ShapeOko has been a ton of fun, and I would like to thank Edward for doing everything very well, and especially adhering to the pri...

Re: Upgrade Parts!

While the parts are not available in the store, it would be cool if someone could mill these parts on-demand. That is the dream of having your own CNC mill right? I would guess milling the parts out of 1/8" or 1/4" aluminum should make them good enough for use...? I'd love to try but, I am waiting t...

Re: What Causes Z-axis Motor to Skip Steps?

Wow that was some excellent nerd stepper motor talk. It made my day.

I will have to read that entire article thoroughly sometime. I am embarrassed I don't know this stuff, but have an EE degree.

Re: Kit vs. Individual Parts for Large Shapeoko

err, in all discussion above I assumed you meant a kit for making the shapeoko larger. I started with the original inventables kit and bought parts to expand to a larger shapeoko. Would recommend buying the kit and going from there. Sourcing all parts yourself is doable, but may take a looong time. ...

Re: Kit vs. Individual Parts for Large Shapeoko

err, I am not as organized as I like to be. See the image below for a guestimate at the cost. Keep in mind, that I was planning on building a very large 1200mm x 1200mm shapeoko, so the cost may decrease if the size is not so large. The list includes 4 makerslide rails, 2 for the x-axis (to have a d...

Re: Kit vs. Individual Parts for Large Shapeoko

I didn't know a kit was available so I sourced all of the parts myself. It is possible, bolt depot has very nice selection and sells bolts with minimum quantity of 1. However, it is hard to stay organized and order all things you need in a timely manner. It is also a decent amount of work. That said...

What Causes Z-axis Motor to Skip Steps?

So I have been trying to mill the Reddit Alien in pink foam in order to practice 3D profiling. Overall the results are not great yet. The z-axis keeps stalling and missing steps which ruins the overall shape of the 3D profile. I have figured out that I have been setting the feed rate to 2000 mm/min,...

Feed Rate Does not work With G0 Command?

I have been reading and experimenting more with gcode to better understand what the shapeoko is doing. I use GRBL 0.8c with the default settings from the wiki. When I use the feed rate command with the G0 command (rapid move) the feed rate does not change. Is this a gcode or a grbl feature? So it se...
