At work we do a bit of this and we use the key-locking inserts in plastic and metal as well. See mcmaster.com for reference.

If you are doing any amount of drawing in 3d, they can be really handy. i use one at work every day and have trouble without it at home. Thinking of getting one for use with the free Autodesk program I use, Fusion 360.
