Re: Bought a Dust Deputy
I ended up with 2 of these as Christmas gifts. I'm only using 1 right now and it works great. I could make a 2-stage collector, but it's really not necessary.

Re: Shapeoko2 for Aluminum (Makita)
^^ forgot to add, that was 6061 aluminum, and the 2 rails of my X axis are bolted together.

Re: Shapeoko2 for Aluminum (Makita)
just to add my $0.03 (for inflation), I just cut some aluminum parts this weekend for the first time with my machine. It has the stock NEMA17 motors and stock Z axis threaded rod, enlarged X axis (1200mm rail). It cut aluminum beautifully, didn't seem to have any trouble at all. I'm running a Dewalt...

keep a log for cutter life?
I have acquired quite a few bits since I built my shapeoko. And a machinist friend just gave me 90 more of various shapes and styles! Anyway, I was wondering if anyone keeps a log for their cutters, to try to gauge how much life they have left? For example, I gut a lot of G10, so I have several doze...

Re: Poor Mans Bellows
I realize I'm waking this thread from a long nap... Got tired of having to clean the v-wheels and rails so often due to caked-on debris, since a lot of what I cut prohibits the use of a dust shoe. After trying plastic shower curtain liner (which got caught in the trolley) and DIY paper bellows (too ...

carpet tape to hold down thin G10 sheets?
I've heard of carpet tape or some other thin adhesive that can be used to hold down thin sheets of material. I often cut .063" G10 sheets, which tend to bow upward in the middle the more I cut them. Is there a specific brand or type of tape that someone has found, that holds well but isn't too diffi...

Re: Stock z axis acceleration values
I'll look into that. If I go from 4x microstepping to 8x, do I correspondingly double the steps/mm?

Stock z axis acceleration values
I was cutting a job in pink insulation foam. Cutter made a move where it makes a level cut in X and then activates the z motor to make a shallow ramping down cut. Z is only required to move slowly. Everything was fine until it decided to puke and the z motor didn't move at all, just made an awful no...

Re: 500mm X 1000mm - Which Axis?
My X axis is 1200mm and the 2 rails are bolted together. There is a bit more flex (twisting around the X axis) than I would like, which I'm sure causes some decrease in accuracy, but so far it has not been a problem. I've not tried cutting aluminum yet though. The ease of workpiece access was my pri...

Re: Possible Z-Axis skipping in 3d milling?
had the same issue recently. dropping the Z acceleration from 25 to 20 mm/s/s did the trick for me.
