Ok, the problem your having could be as simple as a focal distance and lens focusing issue. We use a 3" focal height and then use a piece of black anodized aluminum to focus on to see when the spot is as small as possible. The required PWM frequency for the J-Tech driver is 1Khz. Using S commands could dwell on every line of gcode because of the spindle spin up delay and it could be very difficult to laser engrave images successfully. Are you just using M3/M5 to control the laser on/off to engrave photos, or S spindle speed commands with the PWM output to the J-Tech laser driver? I'm not familiar with the CNC controller software your using, but does it execute the commands in real time without dwelling? You may need the PicConver...

This was done with Mach3 & J-Tech's PicConvert DAC for modulating a M140 2W 445nm laser diode on Poplar. The PicEngrave Pro 5 settings were A.000 Min & A-.0255 Max, 70IPM, 25% Feed Rate Change and .006 Pixel Resolution at a 45D angle using the Ellipse feature. https://jtechphotonics.com/?product=dac...

One more question... Do you know anything about Pic Laser 3D? I'd like to do some 3D relief engravings, but I'm not sure if that's the only software I need. I can only assume the black wire for the power supply (ground?) should be a common ground that needs to be wired to the ground on the Arduino also. You may want to contact the person you purchased the l-cheapo laser from on how it should be wired to be sure though.
