Re: Stiffness of the spindle carriage plate

HDVideo, I like that take on it! :D I thought about extending mine down past the mount as well, but the 1/4 inch plate I had on hand wasn't long enough. I cut my LH plate cut Wednesday. Didn't make any mistakes with the CAM this time, and played around with some new feeds and speeds that left a ver...

Re: Stiffness of the spindle carriage plate

I think Neppo1345 has come up with the best solution yet, IMHO. I did a quick drawing in Fusion 360 of a slightly altered version using 5/16 aluminum plate. Since I don't have the SO3 yet, I can't comment on how effective his design is, but it sure looks like it would help a lot. http://www.highdese...

Re: 185 oz. Steppers on SO3

I actually wrote them a while back asking exactly what was in the box. Seems it's a single breakout board with 4 drivers included on the board, most likely their own design. I'm pretty sure if they used geckos, he would have said that. Still though, their equipment has a good reputation, so for a s...

Re: 185 oz. Steppers on SO3

By rabbit hole, I meant the mania for upgrading / improving the machine. I read an earlier post of yours where you discuss upgrading the belt and pulleys. If I understand correctly, only the X and Y axis can easily be upgraded (not enough clearance on the Z axis) and parts involved would just be th...

Re: 185 oz. Steppers on SO3

Thanks for the suggestion, Defy. It is an option I'm considering. I too have faith that the problem will be resolved at some point, but I'd like to get started using the machine without the worry that it will stop working 2 hours into a 2 hour ten minute job. Also, if the fix turns out to be a redes...

Re: 185 oz. Steppers on SO3

Thanks for your input Will although I'm not sure why you consider my approach to dealing with a known problem a "rabbit hole". PMDX is an established player in the CNC arena and the parallel port interface for CNC machines is much more common than Arduino/GRBL shield control, at least that's what I'...

185 oz. Steppers on SO3

As I've posted elsewhere, I'm interested in the SO3, but still have concerns about the disconnect issues. To eliminate potential headaches right off the bat, I'm considering purchasing the Sparkfun mechanical kit (https://www.sparkfun.com/products/13713), PMDX-340 controller (http://www.pmdx.com/PMD...

Re: Disconnect Issues and the Sparkfun Controller

Thanks for the reply jbc. Do you have the SO3 or the Sparkfun version?
