Re: Using Shapeoko 3 to drill 1/8 thick aluminum.

a waterproof tray A baker's sheet pan AKA a rimmed cookie sheet works in a pinch (though don't let the baker in your life catch you borrowing it :-) Roasting pans have too high a lip, which makes it harder to clamp. -John Oh she won't, but where do i put the tray ? under my SO3 or on the Wasteboard...

Re: SO3 hole tolerances?

Thank you Will. I have finally made some progress. I shimmed one Y axis rail with washers I had, and then used ratchet strap to pull frame diagonally into alignment. Tightened everything down, the frame gave away little bit once I released the strap, but Y-axes are parallel at least... I cut my tes...

[*]It will not take weeks to tune the machine. All the squaring I did took me maybe two evenings . I actually did it all twice and the second time took less than 4 hours . I think this is testament to your skill and experience with the machine more than anything else. Plus you've been tuning comple...

Re: Using Shapeoko 3 to drill 1/8 thick aluminum.

I used a normal centre-cut 2-flute endmill. If the parts aren't too big, make a waterproof tray and clamps that can reach in and hold the part inside the tray. Then use cutting fluid from a gallon jug instead of a spray. I think the fluid can be reused for quite a while if you just filter out the s...

Re: Using Shapeoko 3 to drill 1/8 thick aluminum.

It might be interesting to try mounting an auto centre punch on the CNC, to provide some dimples in the metal first. eg: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001RGQP50 Anyone tried this already? :) I think it's totally possible if you design a mount or clamp to hold the auto center punch in place. On the ot...

Re: Using Shapeoko 3 to drill 1/8 thick aluminum.

I peck-drilled 'a few' holes in 6mm and 8mm 6082 during my last rebuild. I'll admit to using high speed on the spindle, and even a 100mm/minute plunge rate, but I pecked really, really shallow, about 0.2mm with several full lifts to clear the swarf. And I used lots of cutting fluid. (There's no ' t...

Re: Shapeoko 3 cutting aluminum plate hexagonal shape though

I use MakerCAM and F-engrave, and am transitioning to Carbide Create. When I worked w/ aluminum, I made a fixture of MDF which included a milled pocket for the aluminum sheet and hardware to fasten everything in place. That's a good idea to create a fixture, but wouldn't work in my case haha. I fin...

Re: Using Shapeoko 3 to drill 1/8 thick aluminum.

Henry, you might want to setup a job to spot all the holes with a bit more like this. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1pc-1-8-x-90-Cobalt-Spot-Drill-/221975445296?hash=item33aec47f30:g:2Q8AAOSw5IJWeVL5 Even a 1/8" drill will want to drift abit. The circuit board drills have a flatter point because the mate...

Re: Shapeoko 3 cutting aluminum plate hexagonal shape though

The initial difficulties are likely cutting too deeply due to slight variations in the Wasteboard thickness. The difficulties at the end of the cut are likely caused by the cut out portion being unsecured and vibrating — can you put fasteners through the holes to secure it? When I was doing the CAM...
