Shapeoko Is Falling Apart, Please Help

Post by Vandel212 » Wed Aug 25, 2021 9:17 pm

I was milling some plywood, and 2/3 of the way through it got stuck, and started doing that thing where it sounds like a machine gun, and rapidly moving back and forth a tiny bit (on the X-Axis). I turned the machine off, and tried to move it by hand. It was still stuck (both directions), I gave it a good push, and it came loose, but moving it back and forth, you can feel it's not right. Kind of like it's a bit grindy. Then after I moved it to the side, I found this machine screw (or whatever it is) on top of the X Gantry.

Anyone have any idea what could that be to, and why my CNC decided to freeze up?

Hi Vandel,

This screw is called a “set screw” and is usually used to attach and lock the pulleys onto the stepper motors or to the threaded rod for your z axis. The machine gun noise is probably caused by the stepper being blocked while they try to move.

ahhhhhhh, interesting. I'll have to take a look at that and use some Loctite. Thanks!
