Insertion nut screw shaft too large for makerslide

Post by jgupton » Sun May 19, 2013 12:20 am

I'm assembling a new Shapeoko and have been unable to mount the spindle due to the size of the collar that receives the screw being too large to slide into the makerslide. I've tried numerous of the different insertions nuts to no avail. Anyone have any advice or run into/fix this issue in the past?

Thanks!

Just to rule out the obvious...have you tried flipping it over? The part that protrudes from the insertion nut should face inward toward the MakerSlide.

I think that's how I've got it set up. Here's a few pics to clarify. It seems like I will need to either grind off the sides of the collar part that receives the bolt, get a different piece of makerslide or try and find a different insertion nut that will fit.

Do you see anything I'm missing (probably something obvious)?

Thanks!

Looks like you've got it backwards. The raised collar should face "in", or away from your mount. At least that's how all of the ones on my Hadron sitting beside me are.

Is that a new mount? Mine looks like an exhaust clamp, that looks like a nice machined part.

That was it - duh...

My wife was looking over my shoulder as I read this and said - why didn't you think of that.

Thanks for the assistance!

p.s. - not sure about the mount being being new or not - it's what came with the kit

That is a newer style of mount --- it'd be great if you could re-take your photos w/ the right orientation and upload them to the wiki, since currently we only have phots of the older style.

Really? I have the "new" mounts and I've got my Shapeoko back in September (batch 3).

Maybe ``non-original'' or ``post batch 1''?

See the Parts page in the wiki for the original mount option.

A couple of things you may not have known about Enraged:
1.) Enraged has a spindle clamp that looks like an exhaust clamp because it is an exhaust clamp
2.) Enraged has a machine with a serial number in the *low* double digits, which means that it came out of my garage.
3.) Enraged has been part of the community since it was knee high to a grasshopper
4.) Enraged is the *only* other Admin on the forum.
5.) Enraged stepped up and did a lot of the leg work to keep the forum running in the early days. And all that work is still appreciated *a lot* by me :-)
6.) Enraged designed his own version of the 4 axis stepper shield.
7.) I have a machine that uses his stepper shield :-)

To solve the mystery of "The New Spindle Mount": One of the only things I changed when inventables started selling the kit was the spindle mount. I designed a new one that was fairly universal and could be easily machined. So everyone from batch #1 and after, has a "new" spindle mount.

You're not the only one who did this! I was just coming to the forum to post this exact question and felt pretty silly when I read the answer ;)
