Flanged ball bearing will not fit the Z-axis motor mount

Post by leem0401 » Wed Apr 30, 2014 11:31 pm

I just received my full kit today and was assembling everything with no problem.
That is until I ran into the problem of flanged bearing not fitting on the z-axis motor mount.
I've tried to use my mallet to tap it into place since it would not fit no matter how hard I pushed it.

And no, I'm not trying to insert the flanged side of the ball bearing...
It seems like the diameter of the hole on the motor mount is too small for some reason.

Please help me finish assembling the kit!

Thank you!

I had the same problem a few days ago. I sanded the paint from the inside of the hole and then used my vise, with soft jaws, to press fit it into the hole. It is tight so it has to go in absolutely parallel.

The powder coating thickness is a bit variable. Woodworker's suggestion is good, follow that.

Will I meant to ask this yesterday, was the bearing supposed to be a press fit or drop in?

It should just drop in, mine did. The wave disc spring is there to help make up for the fact that it's not a press fit --- discussion of the sizing and fit here: http://www.shapeoko.com/forum/viewtopic ... 03&p=24837

The problem is that the thickness of the powder coating will vary from batch-to-batch.

This reminds me of the good old days (fall 2012), when I got a small lot of laser-cut stainless steel parts (for 25 machines, if I recall correctly) and I was just learning the tolerances of that particular fabricator. The bearings and the eccentric spacers did not fit! So I had to ream 50 Z plates and four holes in each of 100 motor plates. It was a lot of fun.

Powder coat is generally really slick, except when you want that slipperiness to be helpful.

Just to close the loop here:

The OD of the bearing is 22mm.
The ID of the bearing hole is 22.25mm. Tolerance for the laser is (roughly) +/- .02mm - .10mm.
The thickness of the powder coat is .08mm to .127mm.

If all is well, then it's a slip fit. If the laser cuts the hole on the small side, and the powder is on the thick side then we run into this situation.
