Inventables wiring instructions conflict

Post by Itsjesseyo » Sat Jun 30, 2012 9:51 pm

As of June 30th, 2012 there is a conflict in the instructions that makes me hesitant to attempt the last step.

http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/ ... lectronics

The wiring entering in and out if the terminal make sense and the pictures match the written instructions. Red/green/blue/black a swap out blue with white as needed.

However, the far ends that connect with the bread board conflict. The words say to maintain the red/blue/green/black while picture clearly does not. Logically it makes sense to continue the words, because why start a pattern if you are going to change it at the end. However, the connectors can only connect one way - which means now I have to decide if power goes on the left or right. Normally I just try all options till I get it right, but unusually burn out parts n stuff. The stakes are too high for me in this project and the board is completely foreign and likely expensive.

Advice appreciated!

Your instincts are correct. Follow the words and you'll be just fine.

Thanks for the speedy response. One last question. Say I'm looking at the breadboard sideways with the big red button button on the left - does the red wire start on the left or right?

Thanks, btw. This has been a really fun build.

I'm not sure I follow. Any chance you could post a picture? My hunch is that you're talking about the estop, right?

Edward - Is it possible for you or Zack to post pictures of the electrical wiring on a working full/extra stuff ShapeOko that Inventables sells? This will eliminate questions from all the builders in the group. I know that I am uncertain and really hate my self if I blow it up because I did not take time to trace out each circuit. Also a note to others. It is possible to connect your stepper motors and cables to the terminal barrier strip and NOT have electrical connectivity. Check each connection as it is real easy to clamp down on the wire insulation and not the wire. Just ask me how I know. No don't ask.

Good suggestion Bobt. I'll see what we can do.

Yeah Bobt is right. An inventables version wiring assembly final picture would clear things up. I'll go a head and post what you asked for in case it helps.

Given an axis on a breadboard, the white clip fits only one way, you can't flip it, but the wires can be flipped. There's currently no written text or picture that shows the relationship between the clip and the wires - so, given the pattern red/white/green/black - with this picture as reference - does the red go on the left or right?

Hi folks. Colin from Inventables here.

Sorry about the confusion. There were 2 of us working on the documentation and we haven't been able to revisit it for a few days (lots of other stuff going on, including preparations for batch 2). I'll redo the pictures when I get a chance. Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated.

The wiring in the terminal block isn't critical. All that really matters is that you match the motor leads to the right color on the stepper cable, and that you know which set of wires goes to which axis.

The controller wiring at the bottom of the wiki page is mostly correct. (see note below)

Image

The only problem is that the Y axis shell will result in backwards motion. I think this has something to do with the Y-axis motor being on the right side rather than the left. This is something you can fix in software, but the quicker way is to flip the Y-axis shell around so the the wires are (from left to right) white, red, green, black. Note that in this image the plastic flap for the Y-axis shell has been broken off because, as Itsjesseyo points out, it's not designed to fit the other way around. You can avoid breaking it if you take the time to properly rearrange the header shell.

Does this answer the question? Again sorry for the confusion. We'll touch up the documentation as soon as we can.

I realized that there was something wrong the first time I tried printing the ShapeOko hello world. Here's what happened: http://youtu.be/5h2TCSu_4iM

After following the updated instructions from this thread, things are working a wee bit better: http://youtu.be/BnZgMYYeYZA

Thanks for the quick fix!
