What do I do with all these wires?

Post by njfrlng » Mon Jan 12, 2015 7:16 pm

Ive had my machine together awhile now, but havent gotten around to cleaning up the wires from the motors.

I dont recall seeing any instructions on how to align these properly (so they dont get tangled with the wheels)

Do I just run them along the makerslide out of the way of the wheels?

I'm interested in this too. I currently wire the motor cables to a terminal on the mounting plate. Then I run a shielded cable sheathed in cable braid to the controller. Doing so creates a strain on the cable from the terminal to the controller.

A cable track is included to avoid the strain, I've not yet installed it.

It would be useful to see how the cable track is attached.

Thanks, Caesar.

I like to secure them to the plates and then work up a cable management system: http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/Cable_Management

Perhaps you want: http://docs.shapeoko.com/wiring.html and esp.: http://docs.shapeoko.com/wiring_2.html

Ah this is good. Drag Chain, yes, one is included in the ShapeOko 2 kit, but probably need another one. 1 is for the X-axis, the included one for the Y axis.

I believe that the drag chain is included only in the Shapeoko 2 "The Works" kit sold by Inventables. It's not included in the "Mechanical" or "Full" kits. But it's not an expensive part. You can buy them from Inventables for about $20 bucks.

Definitely no drag chain in the regular Shapeoko2.

On another note, my wires are all neatly contained :D

Yeah, I also didn't have much trouble with this. I think a drag chain is largely an affectatious add-on for the stock-size SO2. It doesn't really do anything, it just makes your cabling look pretty. The only real challenge with cabling is making sure that your terminal leads don't flex when the gantries are moving, which can very quickly cause the leads to fatigue and break (very bad!). The easy way to solve that is to lash your leads to the carriage plates in at least two places with zip ties.

I added a drag chain when I ordered mine, and was able to do it with just one length. You can break it into two sections pretty easily. I uploaded pics to the wiki, but they're kind of huge, so I haven't linked them anywhere in the wiki yet (help, Will?). Here they are: gantry 1, gantry 2, y-axis 1, y-axis 2,y-axis 3, and y-axis 4.

The neat thing about posting a file to the wiki is that it will then be resampled by the server on-demand:

I added these to the wiki: http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/ ... ion_Images --- please go ahead and fill in details --- a parts list would be especially welcome.
