What are folks using for aluminum S3 wasteboards?

The included MDF is too springy for aluminum work so want to upgrade to an aluminum bed. Doesn't have to be T slot.

Mcmaster wants $200+ for 0.5" x 24" x 48" alum plate.

There's gotta be a better way. What are folks doing in the way of wasteboard upgrades?

I was actually considering using a pizza baking steel for a bed. Posted about it a while back: http://www.shapeoko.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=7727

A cheaper alternative to replacing the MDF waste board might be to add some support underneath. In this example I used 2" x .5"thick aluminum strips.

Just a thought.
