Hi Ben,

During the build I laid a very fine metal file flat on each of the butt joints and worked it back and forth until the surfaces were smooth. I made sure I couldn't hear or feel any bumps or ticks as the v-wheels rolled over the butt joints. I really can't even tell there's a joint there. The workpieces turn out great.

Kevin,

What is the table size you built for the table your XXXL unit is sitting on? I just ordered a Shapeoko3 and the XXL expansion pack as I also need the ability to work on pieces up to 48” across. This build is my inspiration for my build. Thanks for any info you can help with.

Wes, I apologize for the extremely late response. The vacuum table measures 54" square. The steel tubes under the bed make a 72" square support grid.

Me too. I want to build custom furniture for a Victorian house and need the 48" cut capability. I'm like you, on the fence.

I'm new to 3D routing and haven't bought the Shapeoko yet, The issue I have is the cutting width as I build Gothic and Victorian furniture. The 54" cutting width would be ideal. Are you or will you create an upgrade kit for the rest of us. I'm not going to have a problem with buying it from you. I was planning to get the Shapeoko 3 XXL anyways. Please tell me you can help us out by doing a how to, or creating a kit etc. How well does the upgraded 54" cut. Have you had any problems? Thanks

Hey Kevin,

I plan to do exactly what you did. Could you confirm you purchased a Shapeoko 3 XXL and an XXL expansion kit then modified the XXL with the XXL expansion kit to get the larger cutting area? Have you learned any useful tips or lessons since doing this?

Curious, for the not so bright, what changes do you need to make to the controller to make it cut to the 54x54 size? I'd be very interested in making this build, but not sure how the programs will run the larger size.

So I don't currently have a shapeoko buy I'm planning to buy. Yall might be tired of hearing this but I want a CNC that can do at least 48" x 48". I am interested and have been doing research on buying a shapeoko xl as well as the xxl extensions. My question is, do i want the "xxl upgrade pack" or the "upgrade from xl to xxl" pack? It says:

XL to XXL Conversion Kit

Includes everything you need to convert your Shapeoko XL to Shapeoko XXL Size without sending you duplicate parts.

New Cross Members
2 Longer Extrusions
3/4" MDF Wasteboard (2 piece)
Wire extensions (for your stepper motors)
Longer Limit Switch Harnesses
Longer Belting for the Y axis

Wondering if I need to get the regular upgrade pack which is 750, or rather the upgrade from which is 530. Thanks

I have been racking my brain trying to figure out how to do this. I need my cutting area to be somewhere around 48(54 is fine) by 33”. Where did you purchase the side rails?
