1/4" spacer alternatives / sources

Post by WillAdams » Thu May 09, 2013 9:35 pm

Any ideas?

I pulled apart my machine and most of the nylon spacers were visibly distorted, one so much it's got to be photographed for the wiki.

I bought some 1/2" spacers for some reason at Home Depot or Lowes, but they're too small a bore --- don't recall their having # 10...

Need an inspired suggestion to save me from a trip to the hardware store.

Nominally, #10 is a bit too small for M5, but the spacers are often manufactured with enough wiggle room, and M5 is rarely a full 5.00 mm, so they fit (but fairly tightly, which is a good thing). Most of the time you'll get away with it, especially with nylon spacers, but sometimes you won't. I have a small bag of aluminum #10 spacers with an I.D. of exactly 0.192"... which is a shame, really: I can't use them because they're made too well.

Not sure about inspired, but...

If you don't have it already, get a box of washers. they come in handy for all kinds of stuff, like, for example, stacking over a bolt to provide about 1/4" of spacing...

See if they have a #12 at the hardware store, like mcmaster part # 92510A662 which as an ID of 0.218" (5.54mm)

Another option is to buy them from Openbuilds for $.30 each (http://www.openbuildspartstore.com/aluminum-spacer/)

Broke down and went to the hardware store since I wanted a side vise. Got 4 #10x5/16" x 1/4" aluminum spacers --- started assembling the machine and realized I should've bought 10, then decided I'd leave 4 nylon spacers in place, then figured out that for one pair 1/4" was too much, so used a stack of washers as in Tom Smith's suggestion, so I'm good.

Wasn't able to use the 75mm Socket cap screws, per cvoinescu's observation, but the 70mm pan head screws I initially used worked fine, so it's all together, except that I'm somehow short one 30mm SCS (or for some reason, I'm using longer ones?).

Rule #9.

Will take a bolt and try to get a match and investigate tomorrow. And it seems I'm short, and apparently I grabbed 25mm instead of 30mm on my previous run to True Value...

Thanks!

I just bought some at McMaster-Carr. They are metric, so they are not really 1/4", but they have 6mm high spacers which are .236" so I think that will be close enough.

Yeah, metric would probably be better --- there's another wish for ``ShapeOko Mk. II'' --- all metric hardware.

I bought a bunch of #10 spacers for a "Y-axis motors on the outside" mod, which were too small for the M5 bolts holding the nema23 motors.

I ended up tapping the full length of the spacers and it worked great.

Tapping is a good strategy to enlarge them --- I was actually contemplating using successively larger taps to make a 13/16" bearing fit a mount plate before I got a tapered reamer.

Just an FYI: I put both #10 and #12 aluminum spacers in the inventables store a while back. IMO, they're nicely priced at $0.26/pc when bought in a 10 pack
