Shapeoko 2 geared z-axis design

I have been playing with a z-axis design that moves the motor and allows for more clearance for the spindle. It is still a work in progress and has NOT been adequately tested.

To produce the parts you will need access to a 3D Printer and a ShapeOko that can mill aluminum.

It uses herringbone gears to reduce/eliminate backlash caused by traditional gear meshing tolerances.

The idler gear is intended to have 2 sandwiched 608 bearings and an 8mm hub.

The lead screw gear is intended to be used with the stock Shapeoko flanged bearing that came in the kit. Optionally a second bearing (standard 608) can sandwich the gear and held down with to top_br_zplate to add stability.

The gears are designed to be printed on a well-tuned 3d printer.
The plates are designed to be machined out of aluminum using the Shapeoko 2.
They will be printed for a fitting prototype to ensure all dimensions and tolerances.
The zplate will be machined first.
The other plates may remain plastic since they don't need to be that strong.
Shapeoko 2 #3181, Protoneer Arduino CNC Shield, Step-Stick 4988s, GRBL 9b+, All Aluminum Bed - Misumi HFSQN4-15250 extrusions, Dewalt DW611, Precision Think & Thinker, Collets.

Love the idea! Wish I had a 3D printer to test it.
