It seems to me that the upgrade path from S2 to S3 is sell your S2 and use the money to buy an S3. :)

Apparently we're back to a variation of the closed-in endplates from the SO1.

These will presumably be available in different sizes and open end plates may become available as an option.

Hmm, interesting validation that the eXcellent Competition came to fairly similar arrangement for their ordering system.

The SO3 Update #4 of NEMA23 motors w/ wires of specific lengths and connectors is kind of interesting --- would it then be feasible for an upgrade kit to have extension wires w/ matching connectors?

Could one do a home/limit switch kit w/ appropriate connectors?

Will,
RE: motor wires - I was thinking of something similar for upsizes. If you had a M/F extension of the motor wires, it could couple to the pre-cut lengths and be custom made in their lengths based on the length of rail that you chose.

Edward just posted some details about upgrading the SO3: http://www.shapeoko.com/forum/viewtopic ... 600#p41850

It's interesting to me, since it seems that it's better to expand the machine side-to-side since the front/back plates w/ their angle are more rigid than the flat under-carriage plates.

This raises the following questions:

- what is the upper limit to this design, size-wise?
- is there some aluminum extrusion which would be especially well-suited to use for the bed itself as there was for the SO2?
- what alternative designs should one use when they are exceeded? Torsion box, extrusion frame....
- what increments should the aluminum extrusion be made available in?
- are there specific working area / bed sizes which specifically should be addressed?

4'x4' and 4'x8' to accommodate half and full sheets of plywood seem obvious to me (and I think some other people have wanted at least the former).

Are there some specific metric sheet good sizes which should be considered?

Edward has suggested to me that the reasonable upper limit is 5' x 10' which would fit a 4' x 8' sheet pretty well.

You could go bigger probably, but it might need some reinforcement.

I'm thinking I can get almost everything I want done, just by making the machine twice as long. Keep the gantry as is, keep the front and back plates as they are, just stretch the machine in the long dimension. Should just be 2 new extrusions, and done, right? I work more with lumber than sheet goods, so for me, that works out.

AIUI, expanding along the Y-axis should involve:

- longer straps that go front to back
- additional new center cross strap(s)
- two new lengths of rail
- additional fasteners
- extension wire (and cable management?)

This will all be easier once we have the SO3 B.O.M. available so that we can use consistent nomenclature.

It will be even easier once the bolt-on expansion packs are available.

Newtothis mentioned that it would be nice to have the spindle mount drilled and tapped for mounting accessories, noting that Inventables is doing this http://www.shapeoko.com/forum/viewtopic ... 961#p41964

I think that's a great idea, and was wondering if we should standardize on and match their hole placement / spacing.
