You're right Maker, the shaft is exactly the wrong length. If it were shorter, you could attach the rod and then add pulley, if it were longer then you could attach the pulley and then the rod. The way that I got it to work was by standing off the motor from the plate by about 3/4". That effectively makes the shaft "shorter". You connect your couplers, then the shaft with both pulleys on it.

Let me know if that makes sense, if not I'll try to mock something up in the model.

The other thing I found out, and this makes the setup much simpler, is you can buy a flanged bearing that's 13mm OD and 5mm ID. Then, instead of making a bearing pocket and bolting it into the other side via the nema17 hole pattern, you can just insert the bearing into existing 13mm hole in the middle of the plate. As long as you put the flange on the inside of the plate, the bearing is trapped and you're all setup.

My issue was (because of the order of assembly the pieces, I had a really hard time getting the shaft through the bearing, then the pulleys over the shaft. In the end it just didn't work out for me as planned and I abandoned the test due to the frustration of not getting the shafts through the bearing.

I tried two different shafts (rods actually), an aluminium one and another made from stainless steel both were from mcmaster.

Perhaps then it might be worth trying attaching both pulleys to the shaft, flanged bearing one end (or both) and motor shaft / drive shaft coupled. This way both pulleys are perfectly timed on the same rod and if the worm screws on both pulleys align on the same dive shaft rod any error is then also shared.

Hi everyone,
Does anyone know where I can get the parts for the dual drive. i.e the pulley, the smooth idlers and the belt. I have looked on Instructables and they have 6 week lead time and the international postage is $40 for $15 worth of parts. I wish i had ordered them when I got my machine...

I looked there but they don't have the belt or idler. I think will look for some belts and pulleys locally and replace all of the ones on the y axis.

I plan to just use the one idler per side method as shown in the wiki. And the pulley and belt can be purchased at the supplier sdp-si.com

Yes, both of those are correct. As you may have noticed SDP-SI is out of the 5mm variety. And have been for some time. Last time I checked, it was a 6 week lead time! That was last week...

I talked to Inventables and ordered some more belting and idlers and they will place it in with my ShapeOko when it ships (I'm Batch2). They are super helpful and actually will refund my shipping on those parts as well as it will go in the box with my other parts.

So I suppose they will have some in stock before 6 weeks as Batch2 will start shipping on or before Aug9th I believe.
