Z-Axis Knob

Post by hanselcj » Sun Feb 15, 2015 3:35 pm

I have been wanting a Z knob for a while and wasn't super wild about the inventables one. My vac hose runs right over that spot and the handle on their knob would probably do a lot of hitting on that hose. Besides, I have a mill, why not make one?!

The original plan was to drill and tap that big shaft for a set screw. After doing a bit of reaming with a 1/4" drill bit I realized a press fit would be more than adequate. I used a 3/4" thick piece of delrin, but in retrospect a 1/2" piece would have been more than adequate. Anyone wanting to reproduce this could also use wood. Just slightly undersize the hole (mine is for a NEMA 23) and ream it out slowly. A little glue would help it slide on, then stay firm once dried. Tapping with a hammer is inadvisable.

My SGV is included, and again, my center hole is 1/4" for the NEMA 23s. NEMA 17 Z-axis users will need to adjust that.

It's still useful for those upgrading/upgraded to Nema 23 :D

(enlarging the shaft hole to 1/2")

DOH! Oh well, still made it myself, and it didn't cost me much of anything.
