Unofficial Poll: Shapeoko 3 Work areas

Post by WillAdams » Tue Mar 10, 2015 2:46 am

This is an Unofficial effort at marketing research.

No guarantees, no promises, just a chance to share preferences /wishes and to comment.

In particular, is there some Metric standard for sheet goods which should be accommodated?

Darn. I suspect I should've included 48x32 rather than 48x64.

48 x 32 is closer to my needs. I want to expand to fit comfortably on a standard workbench, typically 30 to 36 inches deep.

Baltic Birch ply usually comes in sheets 60"x60", not sure how that relates to metric conversion.

1800x1000 as that is the current lengths that makerslide comes in and accommodates 48" x 24" or 1/4 sheet of plywood. In that you don't have to cut the makerslide to build a machine to cover that area. I believe it will also cover a 1/2 sheet of Baltic birch. What size is sheet goods in countries other than the U.S. ?

My 1950s single car detached garage isn't big enough for a giant full-sheet machine, and even 1m x 1m would be pushing it.

Fortunately, the stuff I was planning to make would have just barely fit on the Shapeoko 2, so the extra 4" in each direction on the stock Shapeoko 3 is plenty for me.

Typical metric plywood sheets are described as 2440mm x 1220mm which is pretty much the rounded figures for an 8' x 4' sheet.
In other words, they are the same standard sizes.

Darn mixing units. I knew I should'nt've just added...

The metric sizes are short beyond 16"

48" == 1219.2mm
96" == 2438.4mm

Please round off based on that.

So far we know:
US: a sheet is 8 ft by 4 ft, or 2438 mm by 1219 mm
UK: a sheet is 2440 mm by 1220 mm, so essentially the same; quarter sheets (1220 mm by 606 mm) are available in DIY stores, and also an in-between size of 1829 mm by 607 mm.

Can someone in the Continental Europe tell us what sheet sizes are common there? For instance, I seem to find 2800 mm by 2070 mm sheets of MDF and 2500 mm by 1250 mm plywood in German stores, but I don't know whether that's typical.
