Is the z motor mount delrin?
Is the z motor mount delrin?
Is the z motor mount delrin? I'm going to make some bearing holders for my dual belt drive and I'd like to use the same material.
I was going to mount my motor on spacers and use a zero backlash to connect the rod to the motor. However I just realized that I can simply place my shaft drive in place of a pair of idler wheels. Then I can simply use three pulleys for the y drive and eliminate the connector.

Re: Is the z motor mount delrin?
I think it may be HDPE or UHMW, some sort of polyethylene

Hi Willo,
It is indeed Delrin.

Does the Delrin offer advantages over UHMW for a motor mount? I thought the low coefficient of friction was Delrin's main advantage, and it doesn't seem like the motor mount requires this. Just curious, IANA materials engineer, so I'm new to design choices in plastics.

Re: Is the z motor mount delrin?
For a motor mount, I would use UHMW or HDPE. It's easy to machine, stable, and costs less than Delrin, plus as jsbannis said, Delrin's main advantage is it's low coefficient of friction, which prevents it from wearing as quickly as UHMW or HDPE. For a motor mount, there's no need to worry about wear, as it's a static piece

Yeah, I have some hdpe cutting board scraps that I'll use to make em. Once I'm happy maybe delrin for the finished version.
Re: Is the z motor mount delrin?
argh.
Slight delay on this as my power supply has gone out. I've ordered a new used 24v supply to get my other cnc going.
Meanwhile, I also forgot that I'd broken all my 1/8" end mills on my mill...
I think I'll use the extra days to get some 1/4" hdpe rather than cutting down the 1/2" I have.

I stand corrected! IC pointed out to me that I had misspoken on this thread. The z-axis motor mounts are made from regular 1/4" UHMW!

IC and I both have older machines with the white z mounts. From build log pictures it seems like some of the newer machines have a black plastic mount. I don't know if it's still the same material or not.
