Suggestions for CNC work bench/table

Post by nfortosis » Wed Nov 21, 2012 10:57 pm

I am slowing aquiring all the parts I need to expand my shapeoko to roughly 900mm x 500mm. I just realized that size is too big to fit on my current workbench with the rest of my tools, which means I need to build a new table for my shapeoko.

My current work bench I inherited and is made out of an old hollow core door with metal frame for legs and lower shelf. The surface is nice, but the legs are a little wobbly.

What kind of materials have you guys used for your work surfaces? Any cheap suggestions?

2x4 lumber for legs and support structure, 3/4" chipboard top with 1/4 plywood or MDF on top of that for a more smooth surface. Anchor it into the floor or wall and it won't go anywhere. Having the MDF on top of chipboard would let you use it as a spoil board and swap it when it gets chewed up.

I'm thinking about getting one of these from Harbor Freight: http://www.harborfreight.com/adjustable ... 46725.html

Worktop looks like it'll hold a standard Shapeoko. Not sure how stiff it'll be, but for $26 I want to find out.

I ended up picking one of these up on Friday. Ends up that a standard shapeoko fits *perfectly* on the top. I checked with the store and they confirmed this item ships for $7 flat rate shipping, so even delivered it's still less than $35. Which, IMO is a pretty good deal.

I have some ideas regarding what can be done with this sort of platform, but I don't want to hijack this thread. I'll start something new and post an edit to this.

UPDATE: Here's the new post: http://shapeoko.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1002

Edward, I'm looking forward to your thread and pictures with the shapeoko mounted. I have just assembled the shapeoko and now need something to mount it on.

Edward's idea looks great, and if I were going to stick with a standard size shapeoko I would probably buy one, but I am interested in what people with expanded shapeokos have used. Are you guys just using your preexisting workspace or have any of you built/designed a bench with your shapeoko in mind?

I built a table for mine using 1" box steel. I didn't put any cross bracing in it and it moves a bit but the table and machine are bolted togeather so it no a big deal if it sways a bit with big rapid moves.

You can sort of see it on my wiki page:

There are also some shots of it in this thread:

I will try to put up some better pictures if I can figure out how to upload them from my iPad. Right now they are to big.
