Cushioned Detail Sanding Disks

Post by ralston4 » Fri Oct 31, 2014 2:26 pm

I found a way to make sanding disks and published them as open source. I experimented on the best way to manufacture them. I use 7x 3M sand paper permanently attached to Poron urethane foam. The disks have adhesive backing that can be removed and attached to the mandrel.

If anyone wants to try some I've put them up on ebay for sale: http://www.ebay.com/itm/181550550215?ss ... 1555.l2649

After using these disks I go in with these sanding cones to get the really tight spaces: http://www.treelineusa.com/sanding/deta ... kg-10.html
These cones are more of a burnisher rather than a sander but they achieve good results. I also use them to burnish lines to add detail to carved surfaces.

Here's a video of me using these disks (the first design):

The disks work best if you pivot the tool side to side, to and fro. The angle of the sanding changes and removes material more rapidly.

I made the farm design and carved it out on my cnc, that is made with inventables parts.
