WTB: Custom Wooden Screw?

Post by dave_the_nerd » Sun Oct 25, 2015 12:19 am

I'm talking about something like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLTEBUfzFFQ

In the middle of designing some christmas gifts, and don't really have the time/money to get the jigs, etc., to do the screw-making myself. (Due to family and travel, really need to have everything done by Thanksgiving.)

Was hoping, if somebody has the equipment and skills already, ( ) and has the time, if you'd/they'd be willing to make a pair of 1/2" or 3/4" wooden bolts, ~8" long, from mahogany or walnut, with a ~1.5" unthreaded section on one end, and four nuts (hex-sided like in the video is nice but square is fine) from matching material. I would pay (paypal) for materials, shipping to 55109, labor rate, etc.

PM me with a price if you're so equipped and interested. :D

Thanks!

Really wishing I could help out — a screw-making jig has been on my Wishlist for a long while, but hasn’t quite fired (got distracted from my hand-tool woodworking by some little hobby CNC project...)

I know that there were some people in similar straits over Chris Schwartz’s “Milkman’s Workbench” and ISTR that a source was published for them...

Wish I could help out too. At some point I plan on following these plans to make my own tap & die: http://www.wkfinetools.com/contrib/dAss ... Die-01.asp

Interesting. The insert he uses (shown in his "part 1" video), looks like it could be made with a 3d printer without huge hassle:

Also with the tap, I think, if you already have it. The tap is the hard bit (in more ways than one).

Are you set on the 1/2" or 3/4" sizes? I have a 1" x 8 TPI thread box and a tap that I could make the bolt lengths and a matching nut. It would just be a larger diameter than what you mentioned.

I found somebody else to do it; thank you very much for your offer, though! :D
