Thanks IC!

It really helps me (and I am sure others) understand what flexes first when the shapeOKO is pushed to the limits. Even better, you list solutions! The community here (such as yourself) has done a very good job of working through such issues and everyone can learn and apply these things for a better machine!

Thanks again!

IC I am reading about the grblshield mod for z axis
http://www.synthetos.com/wiki/index.php ... r_Shapeoko
And in case I end up playing with this controller am wondering if this upgrade changes things in this area. I am thinking it doesnt, that we still run z axis at 1 or 2x microstepping with this upgrade?

If I am reading it right then you would need to change your "steps per" settings to accommodate the new numbers for x and y at 8x micro stepping and the z at 2x micro stepping. I run my x and y at 16x micro stepping and my z at 2x micro stepping.
I had the z at 16x also and had no problems with it but changed it to 2x to try it out.
I think I may try 4x or 8x because I am getting a lot of motor noise at slow speeds.
I really only notice it when touch sensing the z zero height.
Does that answer the question?

I didnt read it all that carefully but it sounds like there is a decision on this grbl shield to make a mod to go with 2x microstepping (as opposed to 8x, the setting for x and y). If its better at 2x or 8x it would be good to know, I will also try to evaluate my z-axis mod at 8x to see what I think. We will just revisit this if that sounds good. I will be highly recommending the z-axis upgrade to two new users who will get their kits looks like in november sometime. You will be selling these again by 1st-2nd week of november?

The reason you would want to mod the grblshield to 2x micro stepping for the Z-axis is to allow the X and Y axis to move faster. The limiting factor speed wise is the Z-axis. Since you can't have different speeds for each axis, if you run the Z-axis at 2x micro stepping and the X and Y run at 8x micro stepping then you can set your max speed 4 times faster.

Thanks for recommending the ACME Z-axis. I will have more of them available soon. I am just waiting on the ACME screws. They should be here this week. I will post in this topic when they are available.

Back in Stock - ACME screw upgrade for Shapeoko Z-Axis

Post by Improbable Construct » Mon Oct 29, 2012 7:20 pm

Hello all,

The ACME screw upgrade for the Shapeoko Z-Axis is back in stock.

There are a couple of changes for the new batch.

1. This batch of bearing block/motor mounts are black. I have some white ones left over so unless you pick a color in the Paypal notes it will be random.
2. If you want a prototype NEMA 23 motor mount for the Z-Axis let me know in the Paypal notes and I will throw one in.
3. I am including 2 shim washers (just in case)

My first post ... a question for IC

Just looking for some clarification on the wiki page about the z-axis ACME upgrade.

In the description sentence it states:
"Description: An upgrade that replaces the M8 threaded rod with a 3/8"-10 Acme Screw."

In the first bullet point of the Benefits it references 12 TPI(ACME) and in the Materials section is lists "1x 3/8-12 Acme screw".

Which one does the kit come with the 10 or the 12?

Also wondering what the general thoughts would be on getting an ACME screw made from aluminum or nylon even? It would be lighter and hence less mass cantilevered off the gantry rail. Wondering what kind of wear guys are seeing on the screw?

Thanks
D

I would not worry about a few grams at all. The screw is very close to the rail anyway, much closer than the much heavier spindle, so there's not a lot of leverage, and its mass is negligible in the grand scheme of things. I would not worry even if the screw was made of lead or depleted uranium (I would worry if it was made of enriched uranium, but for different reasons).
