G-code format

Hello Everyone! My name is Al DePoalo and I am the Partner Products Manager at BobCAD. I have some questions about the G-code format that is required by the shapeoko controller. If someone could provide sample(s) programs that run on their shapeoko I would really appreciate it.

Information I need to know:

What controller software are you using?

What codes are needed at the start of the program?

What codes are needed at a tool call or change?

What cods are used to cut line moves?

What codes are used to cut arc moves?

What codes are used at the end of the program?

Using this information I can build a post for the BobCAD CAM software that will work with the shapeoko controller.

If you really cared about ShapeOko beyond its forum as a vehicle for your advertising, and had read at least a little of the forum and/or the wiki, you'd know that people use a variety of controllers, from GRBL (on Arduino Uno) to various RepRap firmwares (usually on Arduino Mega) to Azteeg G1 to TinyG to LinuxCNC to Mach3. Each of them is well documented as to what subset of G-code it accepts. RTFM!

I ve worked with mach3 and linux/emc before. The sample above programs will run on mach 3. The other ones I haven t heard of before. It would be really nice if I could write just onw post but it looks like I may need to write more than one....

Just spent some time on wiki and I do not see supported g codes listed. Maybe I just didn t look hard enough...

It does have a good 2d and 3d work flow with heekscam, but I didn t see anything about supported g code. There was a list of cad and cam packages and I guess I link for writing code by hand... maybe I am just lazy but having some members posting samples that are know to run makes it easier on me to create the post.

RTFM, if I had one I would read the x manull, well maybe.... I might just post a question in a forum to find my answers ;-)

Well, as I said, there is no "ShapeOko controller". Many people use GRBL, which can be found on github. The FAQ lists the supported G-codes, right at the bottom. Some people use TinyG by synthetos, of which you can read more here, including G-code support. The best starting point for the various RepRap firmwares is reprap.org, for instance this page; that said, very few ShapeOko owners use those. LinuxCNC and Mach3 you said you were familiar with. Edward probably knows better, but if I had to guess, I would say GRBL was the most popular, followed by LinuxCNC.

My shapeoko uses grbl via arduino and the reactive substance stepper shield. In addition, I have created my own intermediate shield which i currently use for endstop switches and will eventually adapt for spindle control and monitoring. I have found that grbl is implemented with standard gcode definitions, no proprietary codes, and is very easy to modify and compile is so desired.

I anticipate as the community and diversity of our machines grow, grbl may begin to inflate in size and scope and require a more advance micro contoller such as the Arduino mega solutions.

I think a perfect example of "compatible" grbl gcode is the hello world file created by Ed with CamBam:

GRBL Beta Post for V24 Software

Attached is the post I created for the grbl . This post can be used with BobCAD CAM V24 software.

It looks like we are getting some errors when using the above post:

From this error message I am not sure what G-code are causing the problem.

I am thinking I can loose the safety line and tool change and the program stop.

G90 G80 G40 G20 G17 Would be the safety line

T1 M06 Would be the tool change line

M00 Program Stop.
