Project parts resource sites

Post by WillAdams » Sat Oct 17, 2015 10:31 am

Came across and added these:

* --- a free and open-source standard parts library for CAD applications.
* --- free PCB footprints and schematic symbols for millions of parts.

Anything else along those lines, or suggestions for search terms for finding more of the same?

That Bolts library is a good find, and it has a repo on GitHub. :)

Looking around a bit, I'm not seeing anything similar for other things (using search terms like "fasteners" etc). This press release about Michigan Tech University creating a library for Open Source Optics seems promising, but I can't find the actual library: ... ptics.aspx

This seems to be the closest to a coherent list for it I can find:

Anyone know more about it? Hopefully it's not a project that fizzled out. :(

Most suppliers nowadays provide 3D models as well. When designing an assembly that's often where I will start. For example McMaster, SDP/SI, Misumi and others have models of most of their inventory. I find them to be quite accurate, I've designed gear trains using models from SDP/SI, had my parts milled before the gears even show up and they always line up flawlessly. It's pretty amazing actually to have this kind of information at our disposal.
