It took some digging through this old thread on another forum to find the reference of our settings. It was done with Mach3 and our analog modulated dual 445nm 9mm Nichia laser diode build with 5W of total output burning power. You will have to adjust your settings to compensate for the output difference of the J-Tech laser.

I was looking into the j-Tech photonics laser kit as a potential add-on to the Shapeoko 3. [I haven't even got the machine and I'm already looking to add on to it!].

Engraving looks nice and I'm impressed with the quality of the photos here. I was hoping to be able to cut acrylic/plastics and thin wood with it for boxes, or to replace paper components in board games for example.

Does anyone know what I can realistically expect to be able to do with a 2W solid-state laser? Is this something that's only available once you get to the 40W CO2 models?

I recommend the 2.8W or 3.8W J-Tech laser kit over the 2W. There is some information of there capabilities on this page: http://jtechphotonics.com/?page_id=1177

We needed a new 2016 Calendar for the office, so we decided to laser engrave one on 1/8" Birch Ply.

We have been doing some extensive testing with a pre-released version of PicSender. This was engraved on Birch Ply with our 6W 450nm laser diode on our Shapeoko 2. A variable feedrate was set between 200 IPM (white) and 150 IPM (black) using our Feed Rate Change feature in PicEngrave Pro 5.

The laser's power range was set at a Min S15 and Max S255 and there were 1,507,509 total X,Y,S & F command lines in the gcode file. It was streamed to the J-Tech PWM 9g grbl firmware.

Our new PicSender v2.3.0 is now available for download.

http://www.picengrave.com/PicSender.htm

Added Features:

• Pause/Resume for Spindle & Laser. PWM off/on control.
• Change Feed Rate During Gcode Streaming.
• Gcode Editor.
• Tool Position Setting Menu.
• 45 Degree X&Y Jog Buttons Added.
• Increased Streaming Performance.

Just finished this engraving with our 6W LD on Birch Ply. The feedrate was set at 180IPM with a 25% FRC. The size is 11" X 8.1" and it took a total time of 2:00:44 to stream the 1,826,605 lines of X,Y,S & F gcode commands to laser engrave the image. The J-Tech PWM grbl 9g firmware was used.
