Is JTech's 3.8W Laser, the most powerful one avail for SO2?

Post by pmap93 » Wed Apr 27, 2016 11:10 am

Hello!

I've had an SO2 for a year now and I was hoping to upgrade it with a laser :)

However, i feel it's a little weak from the videos, but it doesn't bother me very much.

I think it can cut 1/8" Acrylic with 3 passes or something like that.

I just want to know if there is a slightly more powerful one available for the Shapeoko 2?
JTech has everything, electronics, mounts, and kits itself :)

I'm new to lasers, and i was thinking of buying the kit (plus, SO2 mount), do I need to know anything else? Any mods required for the SO2?

Kind Regards,
Paolo

I would like to think we have all of the mods listed at: http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/ ... ve_Designs

But if I missed one, wouldn’t be surprised.

More information at: http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/ ... achines.29

If you want something more powerful probably best to build a Lasersaur or the Buildlog laser or something along those lines.

Just to be clear, even with a 0.5 W blue laser you have a tool that can blind you instantly, even with reflected light, with exposure shorter than a blink of an eye (literally). Going higher power makes it slightly more dangerous, yes, but it's a bit like switching from playing with small grenades to playing with larger grenades -- the concern is not the size of the grenade, but the fact that you're playing with one in the first place. You need to take thorough precautions to protect yourself and any bystanders.

I couldn't figure out a way to word what I was saying w/o trivializing the low power lasers, which we should not do, so I deleted it.

Please, whatever you do w/ the machine, practice due diligence, research all safety considerations and implications, and always put safety foremost.

Thanks very much!

Don't worry, I'll also get the laser shields and build an enclosure with it.

Replies had a lot of info for me to start with.

Once again,
Thank you

Paolo
