Beagleboneblack and EMC

Post by hippalator » Tue Feb 04, 2014 6:09 pm

Anybody using this board as an embedded system?
It looks promising.
I'm not a techie when it comes to linux at all, but the ability to embed the system into the machine is something I'm looking into.

Hello hippalator. I have purchase my beaglebone black, the CNC cape, the 4x stepper drivers, the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, the bridge to extend the cape so hdmi cable fits and a led screen. All just waiting for the time to install. Sorry the delayed response. But I will get there. Happy to fill you in when it's done. Should be straight forward from a few articled I read.

Beagleboneblack and EMC

Post by LTMNO » Wed Feb 12, 2014 3:28 pm

Okay, just a quick update... I have got everything configured on the BBB side, meaning that it is all up and running, LinuxCNC is running, Drivers are all set. I just received a package today for the QuickConnect for Power as I did not receive any from CircuitCo. I had to solder 370uF Cap on J18 and 100uF Caps on VMOT/GND on the DRV8825 Drivers. I am almost ready to plug it in, I just need to configure LinuxCNC for ShapeOko instead of the default 3dPrinter Setup.

Just as an fyi to everyone: I bypassed ordering the cape and simply wired my grblshield to the BBB via breadboard jumper wires.

It works pretty well. Here are a few pictures of my test rig.

Edward what screen are you using in that setup, is that a touch screen interface?

That is actually not a touch screen. It's just a plain 7" screen with that I bought off ebay for about $60. In the latest iteration of that project, I upgraded to a 10" screen (touch) and have been working on a custom LinuxCNC 'screen'.

I feel like I've de-railed this topic, so I'm going to move my previous post (and this one) over to this thread: http://www.shapeoko.com/forum/viewtopic ... 580#p19511

good source of information is Charles Steinkuehler's page http://blog.machinekit.io/
somewhere on there he has a list of all the capes for cnc, there are quite a few

If anyone is interested in using a BeBoPr++ with the Beaglebone I've got two left:

I've just had a run of some PCBs based on the Rosetta Bone design from Buildlog (http://www.buildlog.net/blog/2013/09/cn ... eaglebone/). Once I finish testing it (and assuming I didn't mess up the Eagle design), I'll have a few spare boards. So far, all the axis seem to work with a RAMPS 1.4 board, but I still need to check the Buildlog shield (and by proxy, GrblShield) and endstops.

I made a few minor changes - a jumper to join the Y and A axis on RAMPS (or an Uno shield), a 2 pin header for a power switch. I ditched the motor enable jumpers, but kept the 3.3v/5v logic selector.

I put a parallel port on the end of it, but I don't have any parallel port controllers, so I won't be able to test that. Once it tests out I'll toss the LCNC config (based on BeBoPr-Bridge shipped with MachineKit) and the eagle files up somewhere to share.
