So sparkfun will replace this board and it was pain free once I set out the facts. Hey there are other maybe cheaper places to get the stuff for this project (I got my motors and a bunch of other stuff there too) but this kind of service is great. Even more important I think is they have these really nice efforts "sparkfun education" they are doing with teachers/young students in terms of microprocessors and electronics projects. cheers.

Ive had the same error on a Arduino i was trying to send a sketch to, I ended up using a FTDI usb to reprogram it and everything was fine. Its just the on board programmer.
