Ornament

Post by Will Winder » Mon Dec 10, 2012 8:54 pm

I wanted to make something with a lot of intricate curves, so I spent some time searching through scrollsaw patterns. I found this trivet and gave it a try.

First I converted the image in Inkscape using the "trace bitmap" option, and saved it as a DXF.

Then I generated the Gcode with CamBam.

Using a 1mm endmill running at 1600 mm/min and 1.5mm per pass, the job finished in 35 minutes. The material is 5mm thick Luan plywood, which looks nice and is very cheap.

Nice work!

1600mm/s -- That's a pretty fast speed! What was your max acceleration set to? (variable "$8", i think)

That trivet turned out great. How fast your spindle set at so that you could go at 1600mm/s.

The spindle is a dremel, it was running at full speed. I think it could have run faster and taken deeper cuts, but I'm down to my last two 1mm bits and wanted to take it easy.

I'm not sure what my Grbl settings are, they are modified from the ShapeOko default settings though. The machine really zipped around the border while making this.
