Wooden Box with Miters

Post by kirkwoodwest » Sun Jun 29, 2014 5:05 pm

Just building my shapeoko here and am about to start testing out some designs.

I'm hoping i can mill out something like this. Although, i'm starting to see problems, i.e. not able to cut a perfect square, edges will be rounded. Maybe somebody has some suggestions about milling something like this?

I think it could be really cool because you wouldn't see the parts which hold it together. Thoughts? Ideas?

Not sure I understand. Are you trying to mill a box out of a block or mill the 45s on all the edge pieces and then glue it together?

Looks fine except that you'll need to re-work the hidden finger-joints so that they can be cut w/ a round bit --- also the 45 degree miter will take a while to cut and won't be perfectly smooth --- options on this include:

- do a tool change and use a 90 degree V-bit to cut the mitered edges
- use a jig to hold the part at 45 degrees to the bit

Discussion of these things in:

esp. see the link http://www.flexiblestream.org/Digital-W ... ts-001.php

I've actually been considering whether or no one could cut such a box entirely w/ a 90 degree V-bit --- modern adhesives are quite good, though I still worry about the end-grain--end-grain ends --- perhaps one could work up a hidden rounded shape? Or drill an indentation at which one could drill to hide dowels?

If you're willing to forgo the miters this sort of thing is quite easy: http://www.shapeoko.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=2796

edit: didn't see WillAdam's post. Yes, what he said.

Edit: actually, one additional thought: what if, rather than trying to cut two matching mitered faces with box joints within them, you cut a triangular, right-angle-triangle groove along each miter face, that a piece of square dowel fits into. It centers the pieces of wood and strengthens the joint. The groove doesn't extend the full length, and will have a little empty curved space at each end, which will be find because it'll be hidden and collect any excess glue. This approach would be stronger and self-centering compared to regular mitered corners.

Perfect ideas here! Thanks for your quick replays I've been stewing over them for a while. I'll let you know what I come up with! Hopefully this week.
