Happy 35th Anniversary Jake and Elwood

Post by RaymondOverman » Wed Mar 25, 2015 1:48 pm

Thanks for "Putting the band back together".

Here is one of my recent projects that included a considerable amount of Shapeoko work. A cigar box guitar with Jake and Elwood sound holes, a cop car license plate bridge, inlaid and fretted fretboard, and custom headstock all thanks to the wonders of CNC milling.

More detail pictures to follow.

End Mill, Ball Mill and V-Carve bits used. It's really nice not to have to lay frets out by hand and the inlay work was surprisingly easier than expected. It may take a few more tries to get it perfected but the results turned out OK for a first attempt. The box has a piezo pickup for plugging it in and it growls pretty well when tuned to open E or open G.

Very, very cool --- it'd be great if you could share your process of tweaking to make the inlays perfect.

The inlays aren't perfect but they're close enough for government work. It's just a positive and negative v-carve toolpath in contrasting woods. I then glue them together with Titebond II and after 24 hours drying time I used a bandsaw at the glue joint to separate the two pieces. I then ran it through a thickness planer to get the face parallel to the back. I had to get rid of my thickness sander because it was too big for my shop or I would have preferred to use it. The fretboard material was oversize on purpose so I would have plenty of material to cut the fret slots on top of the inlay and mark the profile for cutting it out on the bandsaw. I didn't want to have to do a tool change between cutting the fret slots and the profile since they require precision in relation to the nut of the guitar.

I'm still working out the work flow process on these fret-boards to make them as accurate as possible.

Groovy!

Is it a left-handed guitar?

Fabulous build!! I started out building cigar box guitars and moved on to building 6 string Tele's and Gibby's. Notice I didn't say moved up...cigar box guitars are very real instruments!
No longer have a Shapeoko, but use a machine of my own design...

Gadgetman,

You noticed the inlay direction huh?

It's amphibious. It can be played as a lefty or a righty.

I like to look at it as though the player needs to be reminded they are on a mission from God and not so much the audience, but really, after I cut the fret slots I said, "Dammit! I should have turned that fretboard around." You win some, you lose some and a few get rained out.

BHarbour,

I've yet to build a full guitar but it's been on my radar for a while. I have a friend with a plasma cutting CNC and I'm trying to figure out if we can cut out the steel for a national style resonator guitar. I've done some of the design work for a solid body electric but don't have enough understanding of the electronics to put it together yet.

I really hope you meant ambidextrous, not amphibious...

Or you've gone one step beyond singing in the shower... ;-)

Sorry, as an old NC State fan I figure everyone gets the Shackleford reference and use it fairly often. My wife thinks I'm stupid when I say it too.

"Left hand, right hand, it doesn't matter. I'm amphibious." - Charles Shackleford

But you may be on to something there. Waterproof ukes for singing in the shower would be twice as annoying! :-)
