A site like Thingiverse for CNC CAD Models?

Post by levlandau2 » Sat Aug 11, 2012 6:52 pm

So I have had great success with my CNC mill and I am milling many objects.

Does anyone know of a site such a Thingiverse which has many CNC models ready to mill??? The CAD takes a lot of time and work, and I would rather just mill cool objects that have already been designed....

This is easy to do with Thingiverse and a 3D printer, but I have not found a similar resource for CNC milling.

See this topic, where the same thing came up, and it turns out Thingiverse has a section on CNC.

I dunno, the Thingiverse CNC section leaves a lot to be desired. I have tried milling some of the models from there and they don't really work well. Their 3D printing sections seems a lot better, where it is easy to download a model and print it with little effort....

So far, the lack of easily accessible models has been the number one thing preventing me from producing cool objects with my shapeoko...

The biggest two problems I see with the Thingiverse CNC section are that a lot of the "things" are actually printed items that are parts of CNC machines, and that users don't give enough directions (feed rates etc). It seems that the second may actually be covered by comments in the geode files, and improving that aspect of the site is up to the community itself. The Thingiverse folks may be able to make it more clear that the section is for mill-able "things".

So lets get started on this... what kind of site? Like would it have to be custom made? or is a template kind of available?

There are hundreds of freely available gcode/dxf files here:
http://www.cnczone.com/forums/general_m ... t_art.html

Lots of free files here:
http://freedxf.com/

I found a website a couple weeks ago with links to 10-15 different sites like these two. Sadly I didn't bookmark it when I had the chance. I'll keep looking for it.

edit:
Found it, the site seems to be loading slowly this morning so I had to use the google cache:

I am working on a company/website that will be partially focused on this. http://www.Zatopa.com. I have quite a bit more work to go as I am the only one in the company and I am paying for it with my day job. I would love to see the guys from this site on mine when it is ready.
