New Makita Mounts

Post by Damin69 » Sun Nov 29, 2015 3:36 pm

For awhile now I have been wanting to make new mounts for my makita. I wanted to move my router out away from the gantry just a little bit to give me a little more clearance for a new dust shoe. I also knew I wanted to make them out of aluminum. So I have been watching and reading on speeds and bits and finally was brave enough to try aluminum again. I designed my bracket so I could use a 1/4" bit instead of an 1/8" bit since I was going to be milling through 1/2" matrial I wanted a beefier bit to do the work.

I am using a 2 flute carbide endmill, Makita up to 4.5, .002" depth per pass at 25ipm on the first bracket. took 4.5 hours. On the second one I decided to bump the feed rate to 30imp and it took 3.5 hours shaved a whole hour off.

In the end I am super impressed on how they turned out. I just need to drill and tap and get installed today.

Wow! Those look really great. Very clean cuts on them.

Great project, great result! :)
Did you use any coolant while milling it? Oil, or similar?

When had started with a little wd 40 made about 2 passes then I stopped using it. I have to stop about 20 min cause realized I had forgotten to put a tab in on the chunck of alum in the center and did not want it flyhing out and breaking anything. When I stopped I check the bit and it was as cool as it had been when I started so I just let it go. I ran the entire second bracket with zero fluid and after 3.5hour bit was still cool.
