electronics enclosure

Post by xfredericox » Sun Jan 03, 2016 5:51 pm

Well I finally got to starting up a blog. It was an idea I've had for a long time, but never got around to it.

It will be much easier to point friends towards it since some of them always are eager to see what i'm up to.

First post is about the electronics enclosure i am designing. I am still waiting for some components, but i expect to finish it by the end of the month...

If thiskind of linking is prohibited, let me know and i'll copypaste the article here. I'm not trying to get pageviews, its just easier for me.

It's fine, as is the enclosure, which looks to be one of the more ambitious ones.

I really like the look of it and since my Shapeoko is sitting in my garage which is a standalone building I would really like to make something similar. I'll be watching this one closely.

I got as far as buying an E-stop button and a cheap windows tablet. This one looks awesome!

What are you wrapping around the frame? It just says "Encasement".

All will be made out of 3mm plywood. The case will be lasercut like this to allow the bending:

The back bottom part will be solid oak because the grill would compromise the bend. I actually made that part already but I'm working on getting the blogpost ready.

I am really excited about this enclosure because it combines a lot of skills into 1 project. Some relatively advanced (for me at least) CAD & 3D drawing, lasercutting, milling a 2-sided 3D-piece, milling 2.5D contours and some basic electronics, ...

edit: blogpost ready:

Got some more articles up.

Mostly of past projects and upgrades to the stock SO2.
I added these mostly for completeness. They aren't very detailed since I didn't document them as well as i am planning to do in the future.

Very nice design. :D

Any chance of making the project files available, for others to screw around with too? ;)

yeah I will eventually. But I'm still making small tweaks and updates every single day, and I probably will need to keep doing so during assembly. So I'll wait for it to be completely finished.

No worries at all. It's looking really good, and the bits you're posting on your new blog are interesting as well.

... almost tempted to make a slingshot here too... but nah. Not really seeing an actual practical use for one personally. :D
