Did you cut those to length before gluing them up, or what?

no, first glued them into a solid block, then cut to size, and glued again into the board, then a couple of passes through the planer.

if you look carefully, you can notice the seams down the middle where I glued the 4 parts together

For anyone else interested in trying this, the best deal on colored pencils I've found so far is at BangGood.

$10.99 for 36 bare wood hex bodied colored pencils.

I bought 5 sets to play with. :)

Not quite the 49 cents/pack that the OP found, but AliExpress has a 12-pack for $3.39, with a 10% discount if ordering 5 or more. Never ordered from them, though.

honestly, i'd not look online, but in the local supermarkets, just like I did.

Maybe I got lucky but i found 20 packs smiling at me in the second store I visited. They also had the 'environmental' kind, whatever that means, which were indeed much more expensive (around the price of RoguePirin's link)

also someone at inventables forums found this:
https://www.dollartree.com/Liqui-Mark-C ... /index.pro but these are not blank.

Whatever the case, i am curious to see what other people do with this. You need to take your time glueing them together if I can give you guys one piece of advice :D
