I wanted to make a vice for my shapeoko, and decided that it would be fun to build it into the baseplate.

i started by milling the end of the slot that the shapeoko could reach, then removing the plate and finishing the carriage slot with a circular saw and a router with a slot cutting bit

after reassembly:

i cut the carriage on the mill from 7/8" aluminium plate to accommodate the 1/2" threaded rod with a little room to spare. the table itself is 5/8"
Image

the threaded rod is retained by a simple end plate secured into the side of the baseplate
Image

finished vice holding a piece of 2 1/4" square stock

the jaws are easily removed if i need to secure a larger piece of stock to the table, or replaced if i need taller or wider ones for a specific job.
thanks for checking it out!
