How To: Engraved Plastic Signs (Trail Maps)

Post by johnelle » Wed May 17, 2017 12:54 pm

I have a request for plastic trail maps to be posted by the local trails folks on particularly confusing trails. They described a green plastic engraved sign which I interpret to mean using a fairly fine bit on a piece of plastic with a green surface but white/black laminated lower layers. Since this is all volunteer cheaper is better and the plastic materials appear none too cheap. http://www.bfplasticsinc.com/pc_product ... 11D4A0CA1C

If anybody has done something like this could you clue me in on:
  1. Best supplies/supplier
  2. Approriate tool(s)
  3. Best technique
Seems like I will have to use a pretty fine v-bit (1mm? 2mm?) to letter paths/roads.

Disclaimer: I do not have first-hand experience with the material described below. Forum user sgth0mas did a write-up on it linked here:

The King ColorCore website shows the exact scenario that you describe. Towards the bottom of the page, they have downloadable links regarding tools and CNC engraving.

Small pieces (up to 2 sq ft) can be found on the Inventables website:

Larger pieces are available from various plastics retailers.

As a side note, the material that you linked indicated that it was for indoor use. The same company seems to have indoor/outdoor acrylic products (probably treated with UV inhibitors).

May be better / cheaper to use clear acrylic / plexiglass
Engrave on reverse side
fill in lines with colors (paint) high lite
