MakerCam Pocket (Single Letter) problem

Post by junkjdb » Tue Jan 19, 2016 4:03 am

Hi all, I'm having trouble with an SVG in makercam. All the letters apart from the 'i' seem to work fine for a pocket operation, for some reason with the same settings as the other letters the 'i' only gets an outline cut..

The word is "Tequila" and the "i" is not behaving like the rest.

Does anyone know why this might be happening?

The font was changed to outlines before being saved as an SVG from illustrator so should be a closed path.

To see the full images above click the links below. The forum is cutting them off to fit the site template

In AI, make certain paths are closed, w/ correct orientation:

Hi Will, think I was just talking to you on the other forum - thanks for those links.

I re-did the 'i' in the file, seems to work fine, but now the problem has switched to the "t" and I didn't change anything with that path..?!
the file is here http://www.thatdude.com.au/temp/wooLogo2.svg
(The link will only be there a day or 2)

You seem to know a lot more about this stuff than me, thanks for your help.
I just ruined 3 hours work when the makercam gcode file ran perfectly until the end, then didn't raise the bit to the safety height it had used the whole project and dragged the end mill across the face of the timber ruining the piece. Seriously frustrating!

Yeah, the automated aspect of CNC will also make mistakes happen automatically. Best to always debug a machine or workflow w/ scraps / inexpensive, ideally quickly cut material before committing something which is expensive or which requires a long time investment to cut.

If you have parts of a design which work in MakerCAM and others which don’t one can delete the non-working one and manually combine the files w/ a text editor.

Steps to success w/ MakerCAM:

- simplify paths, make sure there are no crossing/overlapping paths, avoid any stacked paths, ensure path direction is correct.
- run a copy locally, rather than in a web browser
- patience, work on one object at a time (there’s an AHK to make that easier)

If you just want to engrave some text you may find F-Engrave to work better — it’s easier to get going w/.

In Inkscape for any font to work I had to convert it to path. When I opened it then in Makercam everything was recognised as paths. Dont know if you probably should convert your fonts to paths to get it to work.

Working as I described, CAM worked fine:
wooLogo_mc.svg.txt
(67.73 KiB) Downloaded 214 times
Load into MakerCAM.
