Makercam + Candle + Laser problems

Post by willypeteband » Sat Apr 20, 2019 10:15 pm

I have a laser engraver. I'm very new at this and here is my problem...

When I open my .nc file in Candle in order to run the engraving it has these vertical red lines. The laser follows those and creates round burn marks. I'm assuming the lines have to do with something in the step down, plunge rate or safety height. When I adjust those to almost nothing, the Makercam page never works. When I hit "calculate" it never finishes. I've let it process for 8 hours a few times and it's still "thinking" when I return.

Here's my process...
I'm creating my design in Inkscape, then saving the sgv file
Open the svg in Makercam and set the parameters. Once it actually/finally works I export gcode.
Open the .nc file in Candle and I get the lines.

I've attached the demo I received with my laser (cat looking thing) and there are no such lines. Mine is the one with the red lines.

Anyone have a solution for me? Thanks in advance!!

I’m no expert on laser cutters, but makercam is expressly designed to create Gcode for cnc milling machines.
The vertical lines are indeed z-axis moves to raise or lower the cutting bit into or out of the material being cut.

They are of no real relevance to laser cutter, as they operate at a fixed height due to the need for the beam to be correctly focused onto the material being cut. There is a version of grbl called LaserGrbl available at lasergrbl.com designed specifically for this purpose. Also worth reading is this link describing grbl’s laser mode.

https://github.com/gnea/grbl/wiki/Grbl-v1.1-Laser-Mode
Shapeoko v1 #????
500mm Y-slides with dual Y-steppers
375mm dual X-axis gantry
150W DC ER11 Sable2015 spindle
conductive probe via spindle shaft/toolbit (can probe while spinning!)
Arduino Uno running grbl v0.9i with grblShield v4.
